........that a third of Michelangelo's drawings contain his handwriting?
Michelangelo produced one of the most exquisite collections of drawings the art world has ever known, but did you know that a third of his drawings also contain his handwriting--everything from poetry to letters to throwaway memos? Hear Professor Leonard Barkan discuss the new Michelangelo who emerges when attention is paid to the draftsmanship and the poetry, the doodles and the scribbles.

Art blART! Atta' Girl Jean - Passing the Torch!

October marked 61 years of everyone’s favorite comic strip ’Peanuts’!

The great and famous author of the “Peanuts” comic strip, Charles M. Schulz, began his life on November 26, 1922. He was born in Minneapolis, MN to Carl and Dena Schulz. As a child, he discovered that he had a talent for drawing and a love for comics. He and his father had a weekly ritual of reading the comics every Sunday in the paper. When Schulz attended kindergarten, his teacher told him, “Someday, Charles, you’re going to be an artist.”

As of February 27th, Universal UClick will begin syndication of Peanuts. As the changeover of syndication between United Feature Syndicate and Universal UClick occurs, some newspapers are using this as an opportunity to ask readers if they want to keep the Peanuts strip. The response from Peanuts fans has been an overwhelming, "Yes!"

For more reactions from fans, here is a link to a Yuma, Arizona newspaper's column on the subject: Peanuts Opinion

It is a wonderful confirmation that Sparky's work is universal, timeless, and continues to be important to his fans. —Jean Schulz

Jean Schulz On 60 Years of "Peanuts"
Jeannie Schulz, the cartoonist's widow, said she often hears from people at the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, Calif., about how well the characters reflect their own feelings. That may be a key to the Peanuts' longevity, she said."Reading Peanuts got people through really tough times in their childhoods," she said. "I think it's mirroring their feelings that life is tough, knowing somebody else is in the same boat as they — and yet having hope."

"Until people change. Until they take a pill to become perfect people and all have perfectly balanced personalities ... I think he's given them a touchstone," she said. "He's given them something to let them know that they're all right. ≈ Jean Schultz

Pictures - A Universal Language

   From the book:

Pictures, a Universal Language
"Pictures are not only a strong but a universal language. The human race is divided into almost as many languages as there are nations, but the pictures may speak of people of all tongues. We say that children are fond of pictures, but notice any man when he takes up a book, and you will see that the first thing that he looks at is the picture. Have only those in your house that appeal to the better nature. "

Sultry Norma Jean in the Kitchen

Impressionist FABstracts...say what?

Impressionism was given its name from one of Monet's pictures, Impression: Sunrise.

Impressionism: The impressionist style of painting is characterized chiefly by concentration on the general impression produced by a scene or object and the use of unmixed primary colors and small strokes to simulate actual reflected light.

Monet, Claude (b. Nov. 14, 1840, Paris, Fr.--d. Dec. 5, 1926, Giverny)
French painter, initiator, leader, and unswerving advocate of the
Impressionist style. He is regarded as the archetypal Impressionist in that his devotion to the ideals of the movement was unwavering throughout his long career, and it is fitting that one of his pictures--Impression: Sunrise (Musée Marmottan, Paris; 1872)--gave the group his name.
Impression, Sunrise
1873 (210 Kb); Oil on canvas, 48 x 63 cm (19 x 24 3/8"); Musee Marmottan, Paris

Stuck inside of Knoxville commented about P.EN. Studio's style... "This month's  featured artist is Pamela Neal. Her art is billed as "abstract impressionism" and maybe that's as close a description as any. There is clearly an abstract quality."

The intention of all art is to reach out and to touch the sense's in some way...to make an impression.  Ergo, Impressionistic FABstrats.  My goal is to make an emotional connection with the viewer and to leave an impression.  FABstract?  To me all of my abstracts are FABulous!  Time to hop on over to the Urban Dictionary and add FABstract and blART...both P.E.N. terms in the blogosphere .  SoKno Gal blARTS about her FABstracts!

SoKno?  SoHo is in New York.  SoKno is in = South Knoxville.  The southern portion of our Scruffy little city.  Another term made popular with local bloggers.

Oh Hail! - Karma Chaos Love Birds

Talk about a sign!....Here was my sign.  I am doing what I am supposed to be doing even in a mass of chaos!  When I painted this it represented one thing......now it says...Yep, even in the tough times you will always have your passion....a solitary path....one on one with the art.  Now it represents a love...my love for the ARTS!

Karma Chaos Love Birds
16X20 Oil
They are sitting calmly on a wire oblivious to the CHAOS surrounding them.

P.E.N. Studio suffered from last weeks Tornado's that ripped through SoKno, and the Southeastern United States.  As I was picking up the pieces and cleaning up the mess, amongst the debris was this painting that I had laid on a table to dry before the storms.  The broken window pane had shattered but there was not one speck of glass on this painting.  And it was right below the window.  Glass everywhere...not on this one.  The name had to be Karma Love Birds.

New itch to Scratch....

P.E.N. Studio has a new creative itch.  I scratched the surface and this is my first experimental piece involving Scratchboard ART.

In the Eye of the Beholder
(click on the title to learn more about this piece)
P.E.N. Studio - Scratchboard - 5 X 7

What is scratchboard you ask?
Scratchboard art is a form of direct engraving. The panel starts out solid black and then the artist scratches to expose a layer of white clay under black ink. The working surface is a three layer medium made up of a 1/8" masonite panel as a support (Ampersand Sratchboard is what P.E.N. experimented on)  The masonite is covered with smooth white clay followed by a thin layer of black India ink, leaving a solid black panel to start with. Various tools are used to scratch through the black ink and reveal the white clay below. Every line, dot and dimple is created by hand all with lines and dots and variation in tone and value are based on how many lines are scratched in a particular area or how much of the white clay that your eye sees. Colored inks can be added to the exposed white areas of the work if desired or the board can be left black and white. Large and complex pieces can take hundreds of hours to be completed due to the many layers of tiny scratches that cover the board.

My second piece/attempt with the medium
