ART Blart! - Homemade Gesso
As an Artist I am always looking for cheapo alternatives for art supplies. Today I ran across this recipe for homemade gesso.
You will need:
- water
- PVA glue
- talcum powder
- any old mixing bowl
- stirrer
- dedicated paint brush (e.i., exclusive to your gesso recipe only)
Procedure:
1.) Mix 3 parts water and 2 parts PVA or white glue. Make sure it is just the right consistency, not too watery.
2.) Add talcum powder until it becomes like a batter. Added more water and glue if there is too much powder until you achieve the ideal mix.
3.) Evenly apply your homemade gesso to your support (e.g., board, canvas).
4.) Leave it to dry overnight. If you're in a hurry, use a hair dryer.
5.) When it's dry enough, sand the surface.

I will meet you on the colorful other side.........
Have you ever stood in the ocean and watched a huge wave coming towards you?
You know its going to hit you. You see it coming. You can turn and spread your arms out, body surf and let it take you to shore.
But, No....you stand there in shock. You can't move. You know what's going to happen yet you are paralyzed. The slow motion action camera kicks in.......then the panic sets in.
You are hit full on. Whipped up in the current. You can't breathe. You are rolled helplessly through the barreling surf towards shore. Rolled over and over in the surf towards shore swallowing water.
You feel your knees and elbows hit the sand and you know what those red whelps with scraps feel like....... They feel like you have just hit the asphalt on that first bike ride. Then,..... and now....your are in shock. You are washed up on the shore. Like a rag doll. Confused....almost lifeless. Your body aches. You are breathless and gasping for air. You are blinded by the sand and salt in you eyes. Your tears can't wash the pain away.
Yesterday was that day for me. (July 27, 2016)
Now..................
How many times have you walked into a room full of people and you will see the charismatic, the boisterous people garnering attention?
Then.............you step back and focus, and really take in the room. You will notice that there is someone sitting in the corner.
Quietly.....calmly....at peace with herself.
She has so many people fluttering around her like butterflies. They softly touch her hand, smile and walk away. Only to return. She sits. They hug her and whisper in her ear. She smiles. They walk by and softly touch her hair. They fly by and light on her like a bee. Like a moth to the lights at night. She sits. Quietly, gentile....majestically. She doesn't know that she is the queen bee. She doesn't care. She is just.......PURE LOVE personified.
She will tell you that you are precious to her. She will teach you how to love your family and you will in turn teach your children to love unconditionally too. She will show the world that love begins and ends with faith in the Lord, honesty, integrity, perseverance and dedication to your family and friends.
You are attracted to her. Her eyes light the darkest night when she sees you. Her smiles wash away the worlds worries. Her hugs comfort you. Just knowing that she loves you is enough to get you through the most difficult and darkest times in life.
She will not falter in times of trouble. She will be there for you.
She is the flower that attracts love.
She is my Aunt.
She is resting peacefully in the loving and comforting arms of Jesus Christ.
I pray that when I grow up I can be an example of true love for everything in this world....family, friends, a place of worship, Our Lord Jesus Christ, the earth that she toiled, the plants, the animals, the air that she breathed.
From afar I have watched you teach your family love. I have watched them love you in every way possible. You built a kingdom of love and grace around with your love and kindness.
She is a flower. A gift to this earth. A blessing to this world in times of discourse and turmoil. An example of kindness. generosity and forgiveness.
May we all strive to be the beautiful butterfly in the corner.
The Flower that is Love.
You lived a long and beautiful life. You are loved and cherished by many. Aunt Maurine I will meet you on the other side.

History DOES Matter
Sunday, November 10, 1940
A day that forever lives in infamy. A day to remember. A day that will never be forgotten.
My father (Dad/Pop) had just turned 16 a few days before that life-changing Sunday. On that day he was 5847 days young. His father allowed him to drive his 1936 Chevrolet to Bloomington Christian Church that evening for what was called Christian Endeavor. The purpose of the group was “To promote an earnest Christian life among its members, to increase their mutual acquaintance, and to make them more useful in the service of God.”
Dad drove Mom home from church that night in Grandpa's 36' Chevrolet. The total distance was the length of a football field. Mom told Dad that she was going to give him a kiss for his birthday. She sure did!! It must have been a doozy!!!! Pop blushed this morning when he told me...."THAT was it for me. I never dated anyone else. She was then and still is my ONE TRUE LOVE." Mom looked at me with tears in her eyes and said, "The same goes for me. The feeling was mutual. And it still is to this day. He is MY ONE TRUE LOVE."
75 years, 3 months, and 2 days later,
They are still in love!
27,487 Days of Tennessee Treasured True Love !!!
Their journey together, on their path of life, began that Sunday evening. 100 yards and almost 100 years later Love began, blossomed and endures. Our family was in essence born that day. With a single kiss. To only have a life long love and devotion to Christ our Lord and Savior.As well as a love as true to one another as theirs...... ♥ Sigh..... ♥ ♥ Sniffle........... ♥♥♥♥ True Love! ♥♥♥ It's a beautiful thing.

The exhibition features artwork created by middle and high school students and offers students the opportunity to display their talents and be honored for their accomplishments in a professional art museum environment. This event is made possible by the generosity of presenting sponsor Regal Entertainment Group and additional sponsors Pharma Packaging Solutions, Emerson Process Management, and Home Federal Bank.

A NATIONAL CALL TO ARTISTS:
commemorative David Crockett Bust
Tennessee State Capitol Commission and the Tennessee General Assembly requests qualifications from professional artists to create a bust to commemorate one of Tennessee’s most notable native sons, David Crockett.
This memorial four-foot bronze bust will be displayed on the 2nd floor of the Tennessee State Capitol Building in Nashville, Tennessee for visitors to appreciate. This project is open to established visual artists living in the United States with a minimum of five years professional experience working on public art projects. Applicants must have knowledge of fabrication and installation of busts or similar sculpture in bronze. Three (3) references familiar with previous projects are required.
The application deadline is Wednesday, September 30, 2015 and the budget is up to $45,000.

Back on the GRID!
The holidays.....yes, THE HOLIDAYS!!.... and taking down said HOLIDAY DECORATIONS are a real task in the household. After carefully and meticulously repacking our indoor and outdoor HOLIDAY DECORATIONS, I finally put on MY to DO list: Paint one painting. Yes, one painting this weekend. The weekend turned into Tuesday after my two other TO DO lists.
I have been off the grid for quite some time dealing with family situations. Grateful on my part that I can still be of service to my folks. I do get frustrated at times. The old saying, "if Momma is Happy, everyone is Happy." God love her. She does rule a tight ship from her new recliner that my Bro, Sis and I surprised her with on Christmas. Pop has an identical recliner. They love them. Heck, when they go to bed I go upstairs, kick back and relax in Pops chair in front of the TV. It is the softest place to land in the humble abode in the 'hood.
Today's offering is a painting that was frustrating to say the least. I have not put paint to canvas in perhaps 2 years? Or So? Who knows?
Please be kind. Time lapse was approximately 3 hours? That includes drying time AND the inevitable, "I hate this painting phase." That is when you look at your work and you realize that you have invented the most spectacular color of MUD. Out comes the paper towels (or in the warmer months) the water hose and you begin again. Rinse, Dry and Repeat....Repeat......REPEAT!!!...is necessary at times. When there is snow on the ground, out comes the box fan and voilà! Semi-textured tactile paintings! Because you have rubbed, scrubbed and painted over the same canvas with countless new hues of MUD!. "Over the weekend" turned into Tuesday. Sigh. I had 'lots of distractions' in the homestead habitat for hilarity. Everyday is an adventure! ♥

Elementary to say the least. I feel better though. I needed this. My folks aren't too thrilled. I make a very large mess when I pull out my creative supplies. Since I have lost my studio space my area has been reduced from a 900 square foot studio to approximately 8'X8'. Creative creatures are very disorderly when in their visionary flow zone. I am anyway. Sigh........On the bright side......I let go. I can see I need lots of practice! Rudimentary as it may be, it was very cathartic to my artistic soul to say the least.

You have to start somewhere though......I have to remember to give myself a break sometimes.

Time to go outside and kick rocks pick up sticks and perhaps yell at the neighbors barking dogs. They NEVER stop barking. I am beginning to wonder if perhaps they have 3 or 4 packs of dogs in their basement that they rotate on a schedule. Or maybe a pre-recorded tape set on an endless loop. Stay inside.....cabin fever.....Go outside.....You had better have a set of aviation grade ear muffs to even sit on the back porch. I have contacted animal control. Nada. I seriously think they picked up a few strays with higher pitched yelps than the other three just to miff the neighbors off. If anyone has a humane solution to this problem let me know. I would hate to poison the neighbors. The wife seems like a pretty nice lady and their daughter is just adorable.

Can you tell painters frustration has set in? Frustrated because I couldn't/wouldn't paint.
Now I am frustrated because I am...at least trying to paint...............Sigh. I know its going to take time to get back into the flow of things. I just want it to be like LAST YEAR already! ☺
Time to go outside and possibly change my pattern. Pick up rocks, kick sticks and feed the neighbors bacon. Make that Vienna Sausages. Why waste perfectly good bacon?

Friday March 7: 1:00-2:00pm, lecture "Contemporary Art in Latin America," Hodges Library Auditorium.

The Arts at Pellissippi State: Student Honors Recital

Pellissippi State Community College’s Student Honors Recital will feature the musical stylings of 18 students. The recital is at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 6, in the Clayton Performing Arts Center on the college’s Hardin Valley Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road. The community is invited. The event is free, but donations will be accepted at the door for the Pellissippi State Foundation on behalf of the Music Scholarship Fund.

The Knoxville Writers' Guild presents "Of Hills and Rivers: Cherokee Women Writers" for its Thursday, March 6 meeting.
The event, which will be open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. at the Laurel Theater, at the corner of Laurel Avenue and 16th Street in Fort Sanders. A $2 donation is requested at the door. The building is handicapped accessible. Additional parking is available at Redeemer Church of Knoxville, 1642 Highland Ave.

Mac Holbert, the co-founder of Nash Editions and The Image Collective and an expert on digital workflow, at a lecture presentation on Thursday, March 6. Holbert discusses digital workflow 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Goins Building Auditorium on the Hardin Valley Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road. The event is free and is open to the community.
